Pieter was born in Colombia in 1958 and grew up in Perú. He has conducted research in Costa Rica (on colonizaiton and state-peasant relations), in Mexico (on caciquismo), in French Polynesia (on the socio-medical construction of community), and Brazil (on slum politics and megaprojects/events)
